100% agree that life is not the reduction of surprise. i definitely did a shit job of explaining this but that was what i was trying to get at with this: "this is why it makes sense for every country to acquire weapons, for no one to ever leave the house and for the nerds to believe intelligence matters. the reduction of surprise increases the ability to exist within one context window while reducing the ability to exist within the larger context window. free energy is not free after all."

re: the china and brain examples 100% aligned make sense. the economic zone general exploration should be another post.

love the smart vs intelligent split.

But I’m just not buying “life = surprise reduction.”

brains crave prediction; less error feels like a mini creation.

but life itself is different. it reduces surprise inside a group while pulling new surprise from outside. so it’s more like an atom; inside the protons, neutrons and electrons come together so that the atom can exist in the lowest-energy, most stable state for the environment it’s in.

but if the atom has a gap that prevents that state, it hunts for bonds and it potentially becomes a whole new molecule with new possibilities.

cultures are the same. look at China as an example. obsession with intelligence and homogeneity led to a reduction in creativity and a lack of advancement/economic growth. it wasn’t until introductions to new ideas through structured programs and testing grounds, like the 1000+ special economic zones they have, that allowed them to make great strides in all areas of their country without losing their shared context window.

controlled points where foreign capital, tech, and ideas could bond with the core without blowing it apart. Once those bonds formed, the whole structure levelled up.

this method has the potential to go on indefinitely.

that design maximises life. each new bond integrates more information, expands the system’s range of action, and deepens existence itself
